Albertsons and OpenAI said Oct. 2 that Safeway shoppers can now turn a recipe, a meal idea, a photo, or a saved shopping list directly into a cart inside ChatGPT. The assistant identifies the products and any available savings, assembles the basket, and hands the shopper off to Safeway's own site to finish checking out -- the retailer's biggest consumer-facing agentic-commerce move yet, in a partnership that already reaches 2,200-plus stores serving roughly 36 million shoppers a week.
The Safeway-in-ChatGPT rollout, in short
- Launch banner
- Safeway
- Planned expansion
- Albertsons, Vons, Jewel-Osco, Shaw's, ACME, Tom Thumb
- Reach today
- 2,200+ stores
- What ChatGPT does
- Turns recipes, photos, or lists into a cart
- Checkout
- Still completed on Safeway's own site
Checkout itself hasn't moved into the chat window -- ChatGPT builds the cart, but the shopper finishes the purchase on Safeway's site, the same split Meta's Muse agent abandoned when it added in-chat PayPal checkout worldwide in September. Albertsons is also expanding ChatGPT Enterprise to internal teams covering digital shopping, fulfillment, merchandising, store operations, and customer service, on top of the "Ask AI" search tool and agentic shopping assistant it had already shipped by the end of 2025.
“This is another practical way we are using AI to reduce friction and make everyday shopping easier.” — Jill Pavlovich, Albertsons senior vice president of digital customer experience
The rollout lands the same month a separate industry tracker put AI-assisted shopping above 50% of US consumers for the first time -- though that survey's two leading categories were recommendation engines and shopping assistants, the exact AI-narrows-the-options role ChatGPT is playing here, not a fully autonomous purchase. Albertsons has not disclosed a timeline for when its other five banners get the same ChatGPT experience, or any sales or basket-size figures specific to the Safeway rollout itself -- the company's broader claim of "double-digit basket growth" from its AI tools predates this expansion and isn't broken out by feature.
- Albertsons and OpenAI launched ChatGPT grocery shopping for Safeway on Oct. 2.
- Shoppers turn recipes, photos, or lists into a cart; checkout stays on Safeway's site.
- Five more banners -- Albertsons, Vons, Jewel-Osco, Shaw's, ACME, Tom Thumb -- are planned next.
- The rollout already reaches 2,200-plus stores and about 36 million weekly shoppers.
- Caveat: no timeline, sales figures, or basket-size data specific to the rollout was disclosed.
