Claude Code's weekly limit rises 25% on September 14 -- and falls 17%, by Anthropic's own arithmetic, from what users have today

Starting September 14, Anthropic is permanently raising Claude Code's standard weekly usage limit by 25% over the tool's original baseline, for every Pro, Max, Team and seat-based Enterprise plan. Measured against what those same users have had access to since May, under a temporary boost Anthropic is simultaneously letting expire, the identical change works out to a 17% cut -- a number Anthropic itself posted, not one a critic worked out afterward.

The temporary increase -- a flat +50% on top of the standard weekly allowance -- began May 13, alongside a separate deal to run Claude on SpaceX's Colossus data center that doubled Claude Code's separate 5-hour session limits around the same time. The +50% weekly boost was originally due to expire July 13. Anthropic extended it four more times -- to July 19, then August 19, then August 31, then a final cutoff of September 13 -- before confirming on August 29 that it would not be extended a fifth time.

Anthropic's original post on its Claude Developers account led with the increase: “Starting September 14, we're permanently raising standard weekly limits in Claude Code by 25% for Pro, Max, Team, and seat-based Enterprise plans.” It did not say, in that first post, what the change meant for anyone already using the +50% boost. Developers worked out the arithmetic within hours -- indexed to a baseline of 100, the temporary boost gives 150; the new permanent limit is 125; 125 divided by 150 is a 17% reduction -- and Anthropic's own account followed up in the same thread with the number spelled out directly.

The framing drew criticism for leading with the number that reads as good news. Anthropic's original thread was deleted and reposted in clarified language within the same day, stating the 17% figure in plain terms rather than leaving it to be calculated. Employees replying in the thread acknowledged the messaging could have led with the change itself rather than the headline percentage.

The change is not simply a smaller number. Anthropic paired it with product changes meant to offset some of the felt reduction: auto mode's permission-classifier calls -- the same classifier that took over per-step approval when Claude Code made auto-approval the default in August -- no longer count against the weekly limit at all, and sessions can now auto-continue once a limit resets instead of requiring a manual restart. None of that changes the arithmetic above, but it does mean a heavy user's effective capacity may fall by less than the raw 17% implies, depending on how much of their usage was auto-mode overhead in the first place.

Four extensions in four months is its own signal. A promotion Anthropic keeps re-upping past its own stated deadline is one that had become popular enough to make ending it outright politically costly -- consistent with Anthropic's own admission that it is still “working on exciting changes” for usage visibility, without committing to what those changes are or when they ship.

None of this changes what a subscription costs -- Pro, Max, Team and Enterprise pricing moves 0% alongside this update. What changes is how far that price goes: a Max subscriber running Claude Code most of the week is the one who feels a 17% cut in practical terms, while a lighter user may never notice the difference between 125% and 150% of a baseline they were never close to hitting. Anthropic has not attached a timeline to the “visibility and control” tools it referenced, and until those ship, September 14 is the only concrete change on the record.
