Baidu rebuilt its entire Xiaodu hardware line around one AI agent -- and gave the upgrade to owners who already bought in

Baidu's smart-hardware unit Xiaodu used a Beijing product event on September 8 to refresh its entire home-device lineup around one upgraded agent: Chaoneng Xiaodu, or "Super Xiaodu." The lineup spans a new smart display, a home-monitoring camera, an update to the company's "Tiantian" companion screen aimed at kids and elderly users, and a smart speaker -- all launching with the same assistant built in, rather than four separate product-specific AI layers.

The more consequential decision is what Baidu is doing to hardware it has already sold: the company is extending the Chaoneng Xiaodu upgrade, first introduced in November 2025, to tens of millions of existing devices for free, rather than confining it to the new lineup. Xiaodu has sold more than 100 million units since launching out of Baidu's earlier DuerOS voice-assistant work, which gives the free-upgrade decision a far larger installed base than the new-hardware announcement alone suggests.

The camera line's specific upgrade -- a second-generation "AI Care" monitoring agent -- is where the announcement gets concrete: Baidu says it supports customizable family-care tasks and escalating reminders, aimed at elderly and childcare monitoring rather than security alone. It's also the clearest sign of where Xiaodu's actual bet sits: not a smarter single gadget, but an agent that coordinates across whichever of a household's Xiaodu devices happens to be in the room.

Baidu didn't disclose pricing, detailed specs, or any plan to sell the refreshed lineup outside China at the event -- consistent with Xiaodu's history as a domestic-market hardware line even as Baidu's underlying Ernie models compete internationally. The bigger signal is timing: Amazon, Google and now Baidu have each spent 2026 pushing agent-style coordination into home hardware that used to just answer questions, and a free upgrade to an existing install base is a cheaper way to compete on that ground than shipping new devices alone.
