[Google](#/company/google) says its Gemini app passed 1 billion monthly active users on August 11 — the company's 14th product to cross that line, and, per its own telling, the fastest of them to get there. The milestone lands almost exactly a month after ChatGPT crossed the same threshold in June, putting Google's assistant roughly on pace with the market leader for the first time.
Four earnings-call disclosures, one accelerating curve
Google has now disclosed Gemini's monthly-active-user count four times in ten months, each one tied to a quarterly earnings call or a standalone announcement: 650 million on October 29, 2025; 750 million on February 4, 2026; 950 million on July 22, 2026; and 1 billion on August 11. Lined up against their dates, those four numbers don't describe steady compounding — the pace of new users added per day roughly doubled in the most recent stretch compared to the one before it.
The curve is bending upward, not flattening
The arithmetic: the October-to-February stretch added roughly 1.0 million users a day; February-to-July added roughly 1.2 million a day; the most recent 20 days added roughly 2.5 million a day. That's not a product cruising on a fixed growth rate — it's one that has gotten measurably faster at adding users in its most recent stretch than in either of the two before it. Google's own post attributes the milestone to "the most personal, proactive, and powerful assistant" positioning, without breaking out what specifically drove the acceleration.

Google's own post also breaks out where that usage happens: more than 100 million people now use Gemini actively on iOS, and the Android app can act directly inside more than 40 other apps. None of those figures is a revenue number, and that gap is doing real work here. Monthly active users counts anyone who opened the app at least once in the period — it says nothing about how many of those billion people pay for anything. Coverage of the announcement has flagged the same absence: Google's post and Pichai's own post about the milestone both name the user count without a paired subscriber figure, unlike some of the company's past billion-user announcements for ad-supported products where usage and monetization are more directly the same story.
The milestone also lands in the middle of a leadership change at the lab building the product. A billion-user product changing hands operationally right as its growth curve is accelerating raises the stakes on whatever comes out of that roadmap next — credit for the acceleration currently belongs to the outgoing structure, not the incoming one.
