OpenAI said on August 31 that ChatGPT Ads has reached a $1 billion annualized revenue run rate less than 200 days after the company began testing ads with a small group of US users in February -- and used the milestone to open self-service ad buying to advertisers across more than 40 countries at once, including India, Europe, the Middle East and North Africa. The company is framing the number as proof that its business no longer depends solely on subscriptions and API sales ahead of an anticipated IPO.
The figure that matters here is a narrower one than some of the coverage around it suggests. $1 billion is an annualized run rate for ads specifically -- OpenAI is targeting $2.5 billion in ads revenue for all of 2026, and separately, Bloomberg reported on August 13 that OpenAI's total company revenue run rate had crossed $40 billion, roughly double where it stood at the end of 2025. OpenAI's total quarterly sales reached $6.7 billion in the second quarter of 2026 alone, up 18% from the first quarter. Ads are a genuinely new and fast-growing line, not yet a large share of the whole.
Four OpenAI revenue figures, and what each one actually covers
- $1B · ChatGPT Ads
- Annualized ad-revenue run rate, reached under 200 days after February's test launch
Includes: Ad sales within ChatGPT only
Excludes: Subscriptions, API sales, and every other OpenAI revenue line - $2.5B · ChatGPT Ads
- OpenAI's own target for full-year 2026 ads revenue
Includes: A forward projection, not revenue already booked - $6.7B · Total company
- Q2 2026 quarterly sales
- $40B+ · Total company
- Annualized revenue run rate as of mid-August 2026
Includes: Every OpenAI revenue line combined -- subscriptions, API, and ads
The advertiser base behind that $1 billion is already broader than a handful of marquee brands. OpenAI says the platform now serves tens of thousands of advertisers through more than 50 technology and measurement partners -- the tooling layer, tracking pixels, attribution and reporting integrations that let a media buyer treat ChatGPT as a normal channel rather than an experimental one. One e-commerce case study OpenAI has cited reported a 3x return on ad spend within 28 days, the kind of concrete performance number that tends to pull budget out of other channels faster than a reach or impressions figure alone would.
The India expansion is the most concrete piece of the announcement. OpenAI opened direct, self-service access to ChatGPT Ads for Indian advertisers in the week before the August 31 announcement, one of ChatGPT's largest markets by weekly active users, with more than 50 brands participating at rollout and the agency networks WPP and Omnicom signed on as launch partners. OpenAI has not disclosed how many of ChatGPT's roughly 1 billion weekly active users are actually in India, which is the number that would show whether this is a meaningfully sized market for the ad business or mostly a symbolic first move into the country.
- Feb. 2026 — OpenAI begins testing ads in ChatGPT with a small group of US users.
- Aug. 13, 2026 — Bloomberg reports OpenAI's total company revenue run rate has passed $40 billion, roughly double its end-of-2025 level.
- Late Aug. 2026 — India ad rollout launches with 50-plus brands via WPP and Omnicom.
- Aug. 31, 2026 — OpenAI announces ChatGPT Ads hit a $1 billion annualized run rate and opens self-service buying across 40-plus countries.
Ads reach ChatGPT's free tier and Go subscribers -- the tiers OpenAI's own numbers say make up the vast majority of its roughly 1 billion weekly active users -- and, per OpenAI's own ad policy, appear below the end of a response, clearly labeled as sponsored and visually separated from the model's actual answer, rather than blended into it. Advertisers cannot access users' private conversations, and OpenAI says ads do not influence ChatGPT's outputs. Users can turn off ad personalization, dismiss an individual ad, or upgrade to Plus or Pro for an ad-free product without ChatGPT Go's usage caps. The format itself has kept moving since the February test: OpenAI has since added product carousels that show several items in one placement, dedicated e-commerce units pulling in live price and review data, and cost-per-action buying rather than a flat rate per impression -- the kind of direct-response tooling that lets a retailer measure a sale, not just a view.
Ads in ChatGPT are always clearly labeled and separate from the chatbot's answers.
Not every reaction to the format has been positive -- early reviewers have described the ad units as easy to miss on a phone screen, or as eating into limited screen space on small devices, criticism distinct from the placement question itself. That's a design complaint, not a trust one: the substantive test for an ads business built into a conversational product is whether the separation OpenAI describes actually holds as the format is iterated on, not whether the first version looks polished.
- Get first-mover access to a new, large-audience ad surface inside one of ChatGPT's biggest markets, ahead of most other agencies.
- See ads where none existed before, in exchange for continued free or low-cost access -- with an ad-free upgrade path OpenAI is explicitly pricing this business against.
- Face a new competitor for ad budgets that, at $1 billion annualized, is still tiny next to either company's ad revenue -- but is compounding fast off a February launch.
- Gains a second, faster-growing revenue line to point to beyond subscriptions and API sales, ahead of a listing where diversification is part of the pitch.
The timing lines up with OpenAI's own IPO planning. The company is reportedly leaning toward a public listing in 2027 rather than late 2026, with CEO Sam Altman said to be holding out for a valuation of at least $1 trillion -- up from the $852 billion mark set in a completed employee share sale in late August. A second, fast-growing revenue line that doesn't depend on subscription conversions or enterprise API contracts is exactly the kind of evidence a growth-stage prospectus leans on. It doesn't make the $1 billion ads figure bigger than it is; it explains why OpenAI chose to announce it with this much fanfare rather than let it show up quietly in a future disclosure.
None of this changes what OpenAI's ads business actually is today: a new, fast-growing, still-small line next to the $40 billion-plus the company now books across everything else. The more useful number to watch going forward isn't the $1 billion headline -- it's whether OpenAI ever breaks out ads revenue on a recurring basis, the way an advertising-dependent company eventually has to, rather than announcing it only at a milestone that makes for a clean press release.
- ChatGPT Ads hit a $1 billion annualized revenue run rate less than 200 days after its February launch.
- OpenAI opened self-service ad buying across more than 40 countries, including India, Europe and MENA.
- India's rollout launched with 50-plus brands via ad agencies WPP and Omnicom.
- OpenAI's total company revenue run rate, a separate figure, passed $40 billion in mid-August.
- Caveat: ads reach free-tier and Go users; OpenAI hasn't disclosed how many are in India specifically.
