How to check whether a video is AI-generated

A deepfake video of India's finance minister promising huge returns in a week racked up shares before anyone checked it — and the tools built to verify video are newer, patchier, and different from the ones that already work on photos. Here's what actually verifies a clip today, what's still rolling out, and what a missing visible watermark never proves.

In April 2026, a video began circulating across Indian social media showing Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman personally endorsing an investment scheme that promised turning an initial ₹22,000 into ₹5.5 lakh within a week. She never said any of it. India's Press Information Bureau fact-checking unit debunked the clip within days, and an independent analysis from Hive Moderation put the odds it was AI-generated at 99.9% — but the claim had already reached however many people saw it and believed it before anyone ran a single check. Video is the modality where a convincing fake now costs almost nothing to produce and, unlike a still photo, carries a voice too, which is exactly why it deserves the same real-systems-first discipline our guide to checking whether an image is AI-generated already applies to pictures — extended to what actually works, and doesn't yet, for something that moves.

Two systems built for video — and the generator that just lost its provenance argument

Two of the mechanisms already covering images now reach video too, though neither is finished rolling out. C2PA Content Credentials — the signed manifest naming which tool made a file — reads MP4 and MOV files directly at verify.contentauthenticity.org, and Google says Pixel 8, 9 and 10 phones are gaining video credentials of their own. SynthID, Google's pixel-level watermark, already covers video inside the Gemini app; Google's own May 19, 2026 announcement said the wider Chrome and Search rollout for video specifically was still "coming months" out, so a browser right-click check that works instantly on a photo may not yet on a clip. The generator landscape shifted underneath all of this at the same time: OpenAI discontinued the Sora app in April 2026 and is retiring the Sora API on September 24, 2026 — after independent testing by researcher Ethan Le Sage in November 2025 found Sora's own C2PA metadata missing on downloads that kept their visible watermark, present only once a paid account removed it, the reverse of what a provenance system is supposed to guarantee. Most of what circulates today instead comes out of Google's Veo, Kuaishou's Kling, or MiniMax's Hailuo — three systems with three different track records on actually labeling their own output.

Check a video in this order

  • Download the actual video file rather than working from a screen recording, a social-media repost, or a clip forwarded through a messaging app. Both C2PA metadata and, to a lesser extent, SynthID's watermark can be stripped or damaged by re-encoding.
  • Open verify.contentauthenticity.org and drop the file in — it reads MP4 and MOV directly in your browser. If a manifest exists, it names the generating tool and shows what's been done to the file since.
  • Upload the file to the Gemini app and ask whether it was created or altered by Google AI — SynthID verification there covers video as well as images and audio.
  • Run the clip through a free tool like InVID-WeVerify (weverify.eu/verification-plugin), a browser extension built for journalists that pulls the strongest keyframes and reverse-searches each one across Google, Bing, TinEye and Yandex at once.
  • "A signed manifest names Google's Veo" is a fact. "No watermark, so it's probably real" is a guess dressed as a finding.

Which of those five steps to start on depends on what you're actually holding — a link, a download, or a clip someone forwarded you.

None of these three replace judgment — they narrow it, and video is the modality where judgment alone fails the most. A 2025 industry-commissioned study of 2,000 UK and US consumers, run by the identity-verification firm iProov, found just 0.1% of participants correctly identified every synthetic clip and image they were shown — even though they'd been told going in that some of it was fake. That's the actual argument for running the real checks in order instead of trusting a gut read on blinking, hands, or lip-sync, all of which today's better generators have already been trained against.

None of this makes spotting an AI video effortless — it makes it checkable, which is the more honest goal.
