Agility Robotics unveiled Digit 5 today, calling it the company's first humanoid engineered for cooperatively safe work at scale -- built to operate in close proximity to people on a factory or warehouse floor without the fencing, light curtains, or floor markings that kept its predecessor, Digit 4, physically separated from workers. The barrier requirement has been the practical ceiling on where a humanoid can even be deployed: a robot that needs its own caged lane can only go where a floor plan has room to build one, which rules out most existing warehouse and assembly layouts without an expensive retrofit. Removing that requirement, if the safety case holds up, opens floor space no fenced robot could ever reach.

The safety case rests on three new systems working together: proprietary human-detection algorithms reading multiple onboard sensors to spot a nearby person and autonomously slow, stop, or sit the robot down; visual and auditory cues that signal which way the robot is about to move before it moves that way; and an independent safety controller that watches the motion response itself and can override it if a person gets closer than the robot's own planning accounted for. None of that is a claim NVIDIA is making on Agility's behalf, but the compute underneath it is NVIDIA's: Agility is the first announced launch partner for NVIDIA's Halos for Robotics safety platform, paired with the company's IGX Thor hardware on board the robot.

That last line is doing more work than it looks like. A 10:1 run-to-charge ratio, on Agility's own figures, is what lets a fleet of robots swap onto chargers in relay and keep more than 20 hours of a 24-hour shift covered without idle robots stacking up waiting for a slow charge -- the same logic warehouses already apply to forklift battery banks. Digit 5 also picks up swappable, ISO-standard-mounted end effectors, letting one robot chassis be re-tooled for a tote-picking job in the morning and a different handling task in the afternoon rather than requiring a separate unit per task. Its arms now reach 7.2 feet, up from Digit 4's 5.5 feet, enough of a difference to reach a standard warehouse shelf's top row without a step or a taller mounting base.
The named customer sites give some texture to what "industrial environment" actually means here: GXO uses the Digit fleet for tote-picking and case handling inside third-party logistics warehouses, Schaeffler has run it on manufacturing-adjacent material movement, and Toyota Motor Manufacturing Canada has deployed it on an automotive production floor -- three different physical layouts, all of which required a fenced lane under Digit 4's rules and, if Digit 5's claim holds, would not need one going forward.

The Digit line's track record is real and, on one measure, independently checked: the company says Digit already became the first humanoid to pass an independent OSHA field evaluation for industrial safety standards -- a claim about the deployed Digit 4 fleet, not about Digit 5, which cannot yet have a field record of its own. That distinction matters more than the press release's framing suggests. Digit 5's entire pitch is a new capability -- working with no barrier at all, not a fenced robot that happened to pass an audit -- and that specific capability has not been tested outside Agility's own facilities.

Digit 5 lands as the whole humanoid-hardware field is making the same bet at once, on different timelines: Tesla is converting part of its Fremont factory to build Optimus, and Unitree is pursuing its own public listing on the strength of shipment volume rather than the barrier-free claim Agility is staking Digit 5 on. What sets Agility's pitch apart is that it already has a fenced, less-capable version of the same robot generating three years of real deployment data -- GXO's 100,000-tote milestone and the OSHA evaluation are about that robot, not the one announced today. Whether the new safety architecture holds up outside a controlled environment is a 2027 question, not a September 2026 one.
Agility went public in 2026 through a $2.5 billion merger with Churchill Capital Corp XI, and the company says its Salem, Oregon factory, RoboFab, is designed to build up to 10,000 units a year at full staffing. Both of those numbers describe manufacturing capacity and market ambition, not proof that the robot rolling off that line can do the one new thing Digit 5 is actually being sold on. Agility also told the Abundance Summit this year that it expects Digit's operating cost to fall to roughly $2-3 an hour at scale -- a figure that depends on the same factory ramp and fleet-utilization assumptions behind the 10,000-unit target, and one no customer invoice has tested yet.
None of that makes the announcement hollow -- a 40% payload increase and a 10:1 charge ratio are real, shippable engineering gains regardless of what happens with the safety architecture. It means the headline claim and the proof of the headline claim arrive on different clocks: the spec sheet is real today, and the barrier-free promise is a 2027 field report waiting to happen.
